Jefferson Starship
Jefferson Starship began in 1974 with Paul Kantner and Marty Balin and quickly enjoyed chart topping success. This band was a spin-off of Jefferson Airplane which was started in 1965 by the same two gentlemen. Jefferson Airplane was the biggest rock group in America during the ‘60’s, even headlining Woodstock in 1969. That fame remained with Paul and Marty and the two of them, along with Jefferson Airplane, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Jefferson Starship has endured 37 years as rock’s premier “political science fiction” themed band. Along with Paul and Marty, David Freiberg is in the mix as an extraordinary singer, producer, multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass, viola and keyboards. David has been a member of both Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship and he co-wrote one of their all-time biggest hits, “Jane.” The lead guitarist spot goes to Mark “Slick” Aguilar. He is only the third person to hold that prestigious title in 40 years of both bands. Donny Baldwin was also a member of Jefferson Starship and his tenure was from 1981-1989. In 1994 he joined Jerry Garcia Band, but over the years he has toured and played with Kenny Loggins, Van Morrison, Russell Hitchcock and Eddie Money, to name a few. Chris Smith has assumed the seemingly impossible task of playing piano and (synth) bass for Jefferson Starship simultaneously. The legendary Ray Manzarek of The Doors was the only other person to accomplish this feat. Chris has been their keyboardist longer than any in the band’s history. Finally, Jefferson Starship’s newest member, taking over the role made famous by Grace Slick, is Cathy Richardson. She has quite a résumé to add to the band. She’s an actress – portraying Janis Joplin in “Love, Janis,” a sessions singer, award winning music artist, graphic artist and clothing designer. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Art Direction of her band’s 2003 release The Road To Bliss. She will not have any problems filling Grace’s shoes.
