For the first time at Penn’s Peak, Mel Tillis!!
Mel Tillis is not only a country music legend, but he has also been on television, in movies and even performed as a comedian. His success runs the gamut of the entertainment industry. He began playing music in the 1950’s as a member of The Westerners. His career got its official start in 1956 when Webb Pierce recorded a song by Mel entitled “I’m Tired.” Since writing that song, Mel has written well over 1000 songs. One of the most notable songs written by Mel is “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town.” It was originally performed by Kenny Rogers and in 2001 Mel received a Special Citation of Achievement from BMI because that song has acquired over 3 million broadcast performances. This award is only achieved by a very select group of songs. He was also named songwriter of the decade for 2 decades. Mel has recorded more than 60 albums with 36 Top 10 hits and nine #1 hits. Along with singing and songwriting, Mel is also an accomplished comedian. He was even named Comedian of the Year for 6 years in the 1970’s. He has appeared on 20/20, The Tonight Show, The 700 Club and Crook and Chase. He even appeared in Every Which Way But Loose with Clint Eastwood, Cannonball I & II and Smokey & The Bandit 2 with Burt Reynolds and he was the lead role with Roy Clark in Uphill All The Way. Badcock Furniture, Fina Oil Company and Whataburger even used him as their spokesperson in their commercials. Mel has had quite the career for the past 50 plus years!
